Home is much more than solely well-thought-out design. It’s a culmination of 3 things that create beauty, peace, & legacy in our lives.

“Home is the nicest word there is.”
Have you ever wondered what it was that made a home feel so good? I’ve thought many times about what the “secret formula” to great homes includes. It felt like a secret you could only unlock with time. But, I think I’ve cracked the code & I’m eager for you to experience the transformation in your own home.
So let’s get started. Here’s how you create beautiful homes with 3 vital considerations.
Homes With Heart
When I’ve walked into homes that made a true impact on me, I could feel it almost immediately. It was the story told on the walls. It was the presence in the interactions. It was the inviting feeling of the environment. It was the sunlight pouring through the windows, and the way it highlighted the details of the design. It was being welcomed into family rituals, inspired by thoughts spoken & unspoken. It was honesty & laughter. And layers & layers of love (sometimes in the form of really good food).
To boil it all down, I can categorize each of these experiences into three vital necessities for homes to truly have heart—homes that are built from the inside out. These include Culture, Atmosphere & Design.
Culture
The way I like to think of culture within the home is as the living legacy created by habits of health, vision, & connection. These include both personal and family habits. When we have focused, regular efforts helping us progress towards completing divine missions (staying rooted to our values), we build culture. In his best-selling novel Atomic Habits, James Clear states, “You do not rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your systems.” The day-in, day-out habits we apply shape our reality. When those habits are intentional, we build a beautiful reality focused on a common mission. We live up to our potential & make an impact as a family. This is all reflected in the home.
Culture in the home is witnessed in the interactions, traditions, & service-mindedness of the individuals within the walls. And it’s felt as genuine love.
Because culture is initiated by the “managers” of the home, we built the Foundation First course to build confidence, whole health, & vision into your life! We want you to feel excited about your personal habits and the dream they’ll lead you & your family to. This is exactly how you start building culture into your home! It’s exactly how you start building your dream home. You can find that here.
Atmosphere
When you consider the magic of Disneyland, being drawn in at a favorite family restaurant, or the reverence of a church, we are recognizing the power of atmosphere. Atmosphere is the spirit of a space—or how a space feels. Atmosphere inputs include things like sensory design (smell, light, music, etc.), cleanliness, light vs. dark, & media filters. It also includes shifting rhythms for varying times of day (like turning on lamps in the evening, or opening curtains in the morning).
When these things are considered, we are looking past just the physical and diving into the spiritual. In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we are taught that “only the home can compare with the temple in sacredness” (“Temple.” Bible Dictionary, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bd/temple.). We believe the temple to be the House of the Lord. It’s a privilege that we have the opportunity to build the same spirit in our homes as He would have in His house. Principles of building a healthy atmosphere are how we accomplish that.
The impact of a healthy atmosphere is a supportive environment for our culture, and a feeling to match & enhance the intentional design of the home. It’s really what makes a home feel like home.
Design
There is no question whether or not physical design plays into the perception of a space. They say we “eat with our eyes first”, right? Good design allows beauty & function to fully support our culture & atmosphere. We can think of design as the physical manifestation of those inner values.
I’ve often thought about how beauty is a gift God gave to us. He creates beautiful things. When we can be surrounded by a measure of beauty, we are reminded of His gifts of creation & our opportunity to be a creator like Him. He also establishes patterns that make it possible for us to live up to our potential. Good design is a combination of beauty & patterns (for function, flow) that allow for us to thrive in our space.
Design brings flow, personality, organization, usability, mood, familiarity, comfort & even fun. It elevates the home in a way that continually inspires our culture & enhances our atmosphere.
To Sum It All Up
Culture, atmosphere & design are the trifecta of an intentional home. This is the greatest gift we can offer our families, our friends & ourselves. Home is a safe haven & refuge from the complications of the world we live in. It’s where we spend the most time & formulate our value systems. It’s where we heal, learn & grow if the trifecta is considered.
It’s a great privilege to be able to create a home, & I can’t wait to walk that path alongside you. While it doesn’t happen overnight, there is so much in store for us as we work with pace & grace to create a home that reflects heaven. For what kind of home will heaven be, if home doesn’t feel like our measure of heaven here?
Where to Start:
The foundation of it all is having a clear vision. Knowing what you want is required to be able to reach that target. That’s why I created the 3-day vision kit. A 3-day, 5-minute-a-day email series to help you formulate your vision so you can get started right away, no matter where you are in the process of building a home.
If you’re looking for more than just a vision guide, I invite you to join me in our Foundation First course. In this course, you will gain all the tools you need to become the intentional creator of your home, by starting with your personal culture & habits. It’s a fun way to catch a glimpse of what’s possible for you & your family by starting with what you have total control of. It gives you greater confidence as the manager of your home. You can find that here.
